We care tremendously about our breed. We take the time to research pedigrees for health concerns that may run in our lines.
Our poodles are our friends and the females we use to breed stay with us for life. The Poodle Health Registry database is a great tool for his. If you are thinking about purchasing a poodle, you can research the pedigree yourself simply by registering!
There are only two genetic tests that are a sure thing for standard poodles. These tests determine that dogs don't have Von Willebrand disease or neonatal encephalopathy. We can also certify the hips to avoid breeding dogs with hip dysplasia through the OFA or Penn Hip evaluation. Other tests like eye certification, sebaceous adenitis, Addisons and thyroid testing can only tell us if the dog has these conditions on the day that it is tested. There is a new test available for juvenile renal dysplasia although it is somewhat controversial and we are unsure of it's accuracey at this point. That is why it is so important to research the backgrounds of our breeding dogs to choose mates that lower the risk of producing dogs that may become affected as they mature.
Currently there is a project in process studying the genes of standard poodles and how Addison's disease is carried and produced. You can visit there website at the Canine Genetic Analysis Project. We hope that this study will finally give us a genetic test for Addison's disease.
We had owned mixed breed poodle rescues for years when we finally decided it was the standard poodle in them that we loved so much. In 2000 we purchased our first purebred poodle Nessie (Lady Ness of Urquart Castle pedigree) and immediately we were in love. She had her first litter of two pups in 2003 which resulted in us keeping her daughter Bonnie (Lady Ness' Miss Bonnie of Glen Mor pedigree). The standard poodle has captured our heart with it's intelligence, althetic ability, free thinking nature, comedic behavior, and devotion to us as a family. Since 2000, our knowledge of the breed has grown in leaps and bounds. We are dedicated to producing healthy intelligent pups with loyal and sweet temperaments.
